Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet - Back Door Blues [1961 - USA]

I attended a toys and collectibles expo over the weekend at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds and came home with way too many records as usual. I thought I bought a Shirley Scott LP, but when I got home I discovered that inside the sleeve was actually Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson's Back Door Blues. I had never heard of Cleanhead, but I'm huge Cannonball fan. Turns out I'm really pleased with the mistake; this is now one of my new favorite albums.

By the way, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson got hit nickname after some lye burned his hair off trying to conk it.

Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson - vocals
Julian "Cannonball" Adderley - alto sax
Nat Adderley - cornet
Joe Zawinul - piano
Sam Jones - bass
Louis Hayes - drums

The Firesign Theatre - How Can You Be in Two Places at Once When You're Not Anywhere at All [1969 - USA]

Here's the my dad's second request.
The Firesign Theatre is a comedy troupe that started back in the 60s in Los Angeles. When listening to this album, I seem to recognize some of these famous character voices, you might too. The comedy is pretty slapstick yet witty as hell- they seem to pull a pun out of every word.
Enjoy this silly selection in C minus.

Unknown - Deep Throat (Soundtrack) [1972 - USA]

It's funny how porno films from back in the day actually, often, had good music. Here's a great soundtrack from one of the most famous adult films of all time, Deep Throat. Funny thing about this soundtrack is the composer or composers are unknown- my guess is that they simply didn't want their friends or family to know- but why didn't they just use a pseudonym (like many people in the adult film biz)?. As for you beat-makers, they're plenty of dope samples on here- I've cut up a bunch of this myself.

The Persuaders - Thin Line Between Love and Hate [1972 - USA]

This is one of my all time favorite soul albums. If you're not familiar with the group, you might recognize their hit song "Thin Line Between Love and Hate." But, all songs on this album are amazing- not just the performance but the production as well- knockin drums, creative instrumentation and structures, complex background vocals and harmonies (a Poindexter brothers trademark), touching lyrics- simply great music.

I'm just waiting for someone to do something with "Love Gonna Pack Up"- I've tried and tried, but can't quite get it right. It sounds heavy sped up- kinda Kanye-chipmunk style.

a must hear

Tom Caruana - Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers [2010 - England]

I caught word of this interesting mash-up album off my homie Will's super duper blog YoursTruly. It's hot off the press and free. Innovative UK producer/rapper/Tea Sea Record's owner Tom Caruana cleverly superimposes Wu-Tang members' a capellas over Beatles tunes. The result varies from straight dope to hilarious to chaotic.

Redbone - Wovoka [1973 - USA]

Redbone is a Native American rock group that formed back in 1969 in Los Angeles, California. Some might remember their big hit "Come and Get Your Love" that reached #5 on the US Billboard charts in 1974. What I like most about this group is their creative incorporation of Native American musical elements into their songs. Wovoka is their 5th and most successful album.

My fav track on this album is definitely "Clouds In My Sunshine" which hip-hop producer Hi-Tek cleverly chopped up for "This Means You" (featuring Mos Def) off his and Talib Kweli's 2000 album, Train of Thought.

Gabe Soriano - Demo 2005 [2005 - USA]

Collect all three!

Here's Gabe's first album, appropriately titled Demo 2005. Once again, all songs written by Gabe Soriano; all instruments played by Gabe Soriano.

BTW, stay tuned- Gabe tells me he's recording a new album this month.

Gabriel Soriano - The Love Juice Sessions [2008 - USA]

In a perfect world, Gabe, along with many other hardworking musician friends of mine would be full-time professional rock stars. I had the pleasure/curse of meeting this guy back in freshman year of college at Chico State and eventually rooming with him our sophomore year until he dropped out for what he calls "The School Of Rock" aka vagrancy. Not only is Gabe one of the most hardworking musicians I know, he is also one of the most talented. Gabe plays bass, guitar, piano, drums, percussion, and can figure any other instrument out once he gets his hands on it. On all three of Gabe's albums he writes the songs, sings them, and plays all the instruments. He truly is a one-man band. On stage, Gabe plays with a nifty device called a Loop Station that allows him to play each instruments one at a time and progressively layer them to give the effect of an entire band playing. Although still unsigned, Gabe has accomplished a lot on his own. He has self-funded 3 albums and 5 tours all in the past 4 years. He's also generated a small fan base through shows and MySpace. How does he do this without the aid of wealthy parents or sponsors? Shitty jobs. Gabe works at fast food restaurants for about 9 months out of the year and saves up, then uses that money to record, promote, and tour. On tour, he actually manages to make enough money on tips to get to his next destination and pay for the essentials: food, beer, and pot. He doesn't have to worry about lodging in his budget since he sleeps in his van.

Currently, Gabe is living in Santa Barbara, California- doing his own thing as well as playing in a pretty dope group called Wrong Again. Catch him live by checking his MySpace for upcoming shows or go harass him at Quiznos.

Here's his latest album The Love Juice Sessions.

Shades Of Joy - Music of El Topo [1970 - USA]

Shades of Joy was a short-lived supergroup of a bunch of hippies jamming out some funky, trippy, and soothing grooves on a plethora of instruments. It's a mystery who was actually in this loose-knit group but supposedly Jerry Garcia was part of it. If you notice on the cover it says "arranged and conducted by Martín Fierro". After a little research I learned that Martín Fierro was a saxaphonist who played with not just The Dead but also The String Cheese Incident, David Grisman, Yonder Mountain String Band, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Sir Douglas Quintet, and the Allman Brothers, just to name a few- holy cow. Sadly, Matín Fierro aka "The Meester" passed away just last year.

El Topo is a concept album covering the soundtrack to cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky's film with the same name.

If you arn't familiar with Jodorwsky's movies, I recommend starting with La Montaña Sagrada (The Holy Mountain) and maybe a tab or two of acid- it's really really tripped out shit.

Gnawledge - Granada Doaba [2008 - Spain, USA]

An interesting lil project. Granada Doaba is a flamenco hip-hop fusion album created by Fullbrite Scholoar Canyon Cody and rapper/producer Gnotes doing a research grant on "multicultural fusion and collaboration in Andalucian music." They encourage listeners to share the album and also provide the audio tracks for remixing on their site: http://gnawledge.com/granadadoaba/

Al Hirt - Soul In the Horn [1967- USA]

Certainly the funkiest Al Hirt record I've heard so far. It's impossible to not enjoy this album. It's also loaded with dope samples for all you beat makers out there. But beware, it's already been picked apart by many. After listening to the last track "Harlem Hindoo," check out "Stay Cool" by the Roots, and "Ego Trippin' (Part 2)" by De La Soul.

AmpLive - Rainydayz [2008 - USA]

Surprisingly sick. Hip-hop remixes of Radiohead's In Rainbows might sound like a terrible, blasphemous, gimmicky, idea, but AmpLive not only makes it work, he does it well.
AmpLive, the other half of Bay Area hip-hop duo Zion I, is one of the dopest producers/DJs out there. Mind Over Matter still to this day remains his best work, in my opinion, but AmpLive is continuously putting out ridiculously ill beats. Give this album a listen, it's definitely something different.

King James Version - First Time We Met [1974 - USA]

Gospel soul from '74 by the ultra rare and mysterious King James Version. I downloaded this off of a sweet blog called A Pyrex Scholar. This is one of my top discoveries of the year. Considering this band is so good, its unbelievable that I cannot seem to find ANYTHING about them on the net! Definitely check this one out, it always gets me pumped. Besides, if you want to buy an original copy it's gonna cost you around 600 bucks!

The opening track "I'll Still Love You," provides a ridiculously ill sample- but beware, it's already been made an underground hit by the Japanese hip-hop group Buddha Brand.

All About Backflips - Sleep Is For Dreamers [2002 - USA]

The short lived yet legendary All About Backflips. We could have been big...maybe.

After hearing about an upcoming battle of the bands, some friends and I spontaneously decided to form a band and write some original songs just days before the competition. This was our senior year in high school. It was Will, Reid, and I on the mics. Bobby on guitar, Paul on drums, Chris on sax, and Special Ed on bass. Ed and I also collaborated on the turntables. What came out was some sort of hip-hop/rock/jazz/jam thing. We practiced hard and pumped out 4 songs in probably 4 days. We rocked the battle and ended up tying for 1st place with a already well-established local rock band. For the last song we decided on a truce and played out an epic double band jam with our fellow victors. We also got the opportunity to rock our high school fashion show, and play a totally awesome and irresponsible after hours show on Santana Row at an art gallery. Then we went our separate ways- most of us went off to college. But that first winter break we got back together to record those 4 songs. We found an ex-junkie weirdo named Rick in the ghetto of East Palo Alto to record our tracks for a good price. Afterwards we realized he had no idea what he was doing. But, at least we can still live out those memories in these songs, regardless of the recording quality.

I'm glad to say that we are all still doing the music thing. Bobby graduated with a degree in guitar shredding, Will is in the music biz, Chris is still playing sax, Ed has formed a dope hip-hop group called NOV8RZ, Paul is the drummer for Thriving Ivory, I'm still making beats, and Reid is probably strummin' on his guitar at this very moment.

I look forward to future collaboration with my ex-band mates.

Peace out Fellas!

Ars Nova - Sunshine & Shadows [1969 - USA]

Ars Nova were a classical/progressive rock band from New York that only existed for two years. Here's their second and final album, I hope you dig it.

My favorite Ars Nova song "Please Don't Go Now" is the sample source for one of my favorite Sole songs, "Year of the $exxx $ymbol" (produced by Scott Matelic).

The Cyrkle - Red Rubber Ball [1966 - USA]

Great sing-along folk rock. Cyrkle were a two-hit wonder back in the 60s. Both of those hits, "Red Rubber Ball" and "Turn-down Day" are on this album. Thes One of The People Under the Stairs makes great use of "Turn-Down Day" by isolating the vocals on the left channel and echoing the loop for his track "The Turndown" off The Next Step.

David Axelrod - Marchin' [1980 - USA]

Not to be confused with Predident Barack Obama's Senior Advisor, David Axelrod is a living legend in the world of jazz-funk and hip-hop. Some cite him as being the originator of trip-hop decades before it was labeled a genre.
Axelrod began his career in the early 60s as a producer for Capital Records working with artists such as Cannonball Adderley, Lou Rawls, David McCallum, and the Electric Prunes. From 1968-1980 he released 9 brilliant solo albums, but was frustrated that they never received the recognition or financial success they deserved. Not atypical of a brilliant musician that is not willing to dumb his music down for the masses, he sank into a episode a depression, torment, and substance abuse. It wasn't until 1996 when DJ Shadow released the trip-hop classic Endtroducing that he was rediscovered among a new generation of DJs and producers. Shadow's powerful track "Midnight in a Perfect World" features a sample from Axelrod's song "The Human Abstract" off his 1969 album Songs of Experience that made beat miners' heads spin. Since then, nearly all of his records have been re-released (but not this one) and Axelrod is finally getting the recognition and cash he deserves.

Fat Clark - Happy Punches! [2004 - USA]

The first of my famous Happy Punches! compilation series. I put this one together back in the sunny Spring of 2004 at Chico State. At the time, my friends Nic and Manny were up visiting from So-Cal, and I remember giving them the first copy for their long car ride back. Later on they told me they had an amazing time blasting it on the open road. After that, I made a ton of copies to give out to friends and family. For me it became my theme music for the rest of that spring and through the summer. When putting together Happy Punches! I try to picture the ideal music for a ride on a blue bird day with the windows open and the wind in your face.
