Excerpt from The Brothers Karamazov
His soul, filled with ecstasy, thirsted for freedom, space, latitude. Above him wide and boundless keeled the cupola of the heavens, full of quiet, brilliant stars. Doubled from zenith to horizon ran the Milky Way, as yet unclear. The cool night, quiet to the point of fixity, enveloped the earth. The white towers and golden domes of the cathedral sparkled in the sapphire sky. In the flowerbeds luxuriant autumn flowers had fallen asleep until morning. The earth's silence seemed to fuse with that of the heavens, the earth's mystery came into contact with that of the stars...Alyosha stood, looked and suddenly cast himself down upon the earth like one who has had the legs cut from under him.

The Weeknd - Thursday
What! The Weeknd's new record's been out a week already and nobody told me? That's not a good sign. But before I judge, I'm going to give it a good, open-minded listen. Of course, House of Balloons was one of my favorite releases of 2011 and will be hard to top, but I have faith in them. In case you're not in the know, these "mixtapes" are absolutely free- you can't buy them even if you wanted to. Pick it up.

Israel Song Festival 1974
Definitely a dusty and random dig. I had to remove a layer of crud off the surface, I'm sure it hasn't been played since it washed up on the Caribbean shores. I was told there were no longer LPs in the Dominican Republic, but after a long hot wild goose chase around the capital I struck gold:
Whenever I find a "Song Festival" record, I usually pick it up, especially the Italian ones (San Remo); there's usually good stuff on them. This Israeli one is a first for me, and it was a pleasant surprise. The music strays from epic pop reminiscent of golden era Hollwood film scores- grand string and horn arrangements, to downright dark and funky. An interesting listen.

Afrique - Soul Makossa [1972 - Cameroon]
A fun afro-funky treasure you're sure to dig. I'm especially feeling the title track, a cover of Manu Dibango massive 1972 hit which, apparently is not only the first official disco song, but the only African record to reach Billboard's top 40. Not only that, it was recorded as a b-side to a song about Cameroon's football team! Dibango's "Soul Makossa" is also hailed as a b-boy anthem, but I think this record's version has a funkier and better break. Additional covers such as Bill Wither's "Kissing My Love" make this a favorite among DJs and beat-makers such as myself (;

BTW, I can't take credit for this rip- thanks Magic Notes.

Hilarious Excerpt from Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughter-House Five
Billy invited Trout to his eighteenth wedding anniversary which was only two days hence. Now the party was in progress.
Trout was in Billy's dining room, gobbling canapés. He was talking with a mouthful of Philadelphia cream cheese and salmon roe to an optometrist's wife. Everybody at the party was associated with optometry in some way, except Trout. And he alone was without glasses. He was making a great hit. Everybody was thrilled to have a real author at the party, even though they had never read his books.
Trout was talking to a Maggie White, who had given up being a dental assistant to become a homemaker for an optometrist. She was very pretty. The last book she read was Ivanhoe.
Billy Pilgrim stood nearby, listening. He was palpating something in his pocket. It was a present he was about to give his wife, a white satin box containing a star sapphire cocktail ring. The ring was worth eight hundred dollars.
The adulation that Trout was receiving, mindless and illiterate as it was, affected Trout like marijuana. He was happy and loud and impudent.
"I'm afraid I don't read as much as I ought to," said Maggie.
"We're all afraid of something," Trout replied. "I'm afraid of cancer and rats and Doberman pinschers."
"I should know, but I don't, so I have to ask," said Maggie, "what's the most famous thing you ever wrote?"
"It was about a funeral for a great French chef."
"That sounds interesting."
"All the great chefs in the world are there. It's a beautiful ceremony." Trout was making this up as he went along. "Just before the casket is closed, the mourners sprinkle parsley and paprika on the deceased." So it goes.
"Did that really happen?" said Maggie White. She was a dull person, but sensational invitation to make babies. Men looked at her and wanted to fill her up with babies right away. She hadn't had even one baby yet. She used birth control.
"Of course it happened," Trout told her. "If I wrote something that hadn't really happened, and I tried to sell it, I could go to jail. That's fraud."
Maggie believed him. "I'd never thought about that before."
"Think about it now."
"It's like advertising. You have to tell the truth in advertising, or you get in trouble."
"Exactly. The same body of law applies."
Do you think you might put us in a book sometime?"
"I put everything that happens to me in books."
"I guess I better be careful what I say."
"That's right. And I'm not the only one who's listening. God is listening, too. And on Judgment Day he's going to tell you all the things you said and did. If it turns out they're bad things instead of good things, that's too bad for you, because you'll burn forever and ever. The burning never stops hurting."
Poor Maggie turned gray. She believed that, too, and was petrified.
Kilgore Trout laughed uproariously. A salmon egg flew out of his mouth and landed in Maggie's cleavage.

Screenwriting/Film Industry and Education Banter
This is a response I made to a "Hollywood North" podcast that I thought I'd share.
I often stress the importance of taking classes that the student has no or little previous knowledge of. College is the perfect opportunity to make new discoveries, and should be taken advantage of. It makes me cringe when I hear a student has declared their major before they have even begun their first year. College is not necessarily meant for developing a skill, but discovering an interest that can lead to a passion. Furthermore, I believe college should not be geared towards making the student "job-ready", instead college should help a student gain knowledge regardless of the subject and allow them to gain life skills and experience.
Everyone wants to be appreciated and flattered; artists love to deny it, but they have major egos. After all, art is simply a false sense of contributing to human history that will inevitably one day be forgotten. However we cling to the belief that our impact can continue to be felt by future generations. Writers love being behind the scenes and are indeed in search of meaning to their life, but most screenwriters are not obsessed with the fame and the wealth. They are striving for a higher purpose, whether it exists or not.
It's unfortunate studios/producers etc. want to play it safe and not take risks when it's possible the film could be new and perhaps revolutionary. This is something I've really learned recently, and find it often discouraging (contributing to my cynicism towards the movie industry). It's too often films already have an established market whether it's a remake, adaptation, or fits the criteria of something that works again and again (i.e. "torture porn"). I've learned that by evaluating if the film has an established market or not will give you a good idea whether the film will be good or not- this saves time when picking a movie to go see at the theater!
The only job as an entertainer is to be entertaining- to not be boring, to allow people to escape. I think there can be a third reason: to educate someone. Of course you cannot solely be educational, but a successful movie can leave people with a bad feeling in their gut... but they've learned something. However, to be even more effective you can leave the audience with hope and the inspiration to do something good- did I just contradict myself? PS, I watch a lot of documentaries and social/political narratives.
An excellent movie will remove me from analyzing it and allow me to simply enjoy it. My high school lit/film teacher told me to never walk out of a theater, because you can always learn from its the film's mistakes; I've always kept true to this rule. I suppose that if you're not a filmmaker, you might as well walk out since you're probably wasting your time.

MGMT - Time to Pretend (lyrics)
I'm feeling rough, I'm feeling raw, I'm in the prime of my life.
Let's make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.
I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and fuck with the stars.
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars.
This is our decision, to live fast and die young.
We've got the vision, now let's have some fun.
Yeah, it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices, and wake up for the morning commute.
Forget about our mothers and our friends.
We're fated to pretend.
To pretend.
We're fated to pretend.
To pretend.
I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms.
I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world.
I'll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home.
Yeah, I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone.
There's really nothing, nothing we can do
Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.
The models will have children, we'll get a divorce
We'll find some more models, everything must run it's course.
We'll choke on our vomit and that will be the end.
We were fated to pretend.
To pretend.
We're fated to pretend.
To pretend.
Let's make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.
I'll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and fuck with the stars.
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars.
This is our decision, to live fast and die young.

To pretend.

DJ Spinna & Bobbito aka DJ Cucumber Slice - Wonder Wrote It [2001 - USA]
Gather 'round Stevie fans. The best way to describe this two volume compilation is by exactly what it says on the cover A Mixed Medley of 100% Stevie Wonder Compositions, Covers, and Cookies.
Although these guys are bad-ass DJs, there's no way they could have gotten the licenses to theses songs, so I'm giving it out to y'all for free!

Letta Mbulu - Sings & Free Soul [1967,1968 - South Africa]
Still not an Axelrod fanatic? Well, try this one on for size.
Although known as a jazz-funk pioneer, David Axelrod produced records of various genres; from psychedelic rock (see The Electric Prunes) to Afro-pop.
The Axelrod sound is still definitely apparent in this album, however the African/Western fusion results in a unique sound; Letta Mbulu powerful voice over Axelrod's orchestral arrangements.
Hip-hop heads will dig this too. I was completely unaware of the Louis Logic sample for his hilarious track "Coochie Coup" found on Letta's "Kukuchi."
By the way, it's your lucky day cuz this is a DOUBLE LP!
get it

One of Biggie's illest verse:
sing along...
I don't wanna live no mo'
Sometimes I hear death knocking at my front do'
I'm living everyday like a hustle
Another drug to juggle, another day another struggle
I know how it feels to wake up fucked up
Pockets broke as hell, another rock to sell
People look at you like you's the user
Selling drugs to all the losers mad Buddha abuser
But they don't know about the stress-filled day
Baby on the way mad bills to pay
That's why you drink Tanqueray
So you can reminisce and wish
You wasn't living so devilish, shit
I remember I was just like you
Smoking blunts with my crew
Flipping oldie 62's
'Cause G-E-D was it B-I-G, I got P-A-I-D
That's why my mom hates me
She was forced to kick me out, no doubt
Then I figured out Nick's went for twenty down south
Packed up my tools for my raw power move
Glock nineteen for casket and flower moves
For drunks trying to stop my flow
And what they don't know will show on the autopsy
Went to see papi, to cop me a brick
Asked for some consignment and he wasn't trying to hear it
Smoking mad Newports 'cause I'm doing court for an assault
That I caught in Bridge Port, New York
Catch me if you can like the ginger bread man
You better have your gat in hand
'Cause man
I don't wanna live no mo'
Sometimes I hear death knocking in my front do'
I'm living everyday like a hustle
Another drug to juggle, another day another struggle
I had the master plan
I'm in the caravan on my way to Maryland
With my man Tutex to take over this projects
They call him Tutex, he tote two techs
And when he starts to bust
He likes to ask who's next?
I got my honies on the Amtrack
With the crack in the crack of her ass
Two pounds of hash in the stash
I wait for hun to make some quick cash
I told her she could be lieutenant bitch got gassed
At last I'm literally lounging black,
Seating back counting double digit thousands stacks
Had to re-up see what's up with my peeps
Toyota dealer cars had it cheap on the jeeps
See who got smoked, what rumors was spread
Last I heard I was dead with six to the head
Then I got the phone call
It couldn't hit me harder
We got infiltrated
Like Nino at the Carter
I heard Tec got murdered in a town I've never heard of
By some bitch named Alberta over nickel-plated burners
And my bitch swear to God she won't snitch
I told her where she hit the bricks I'll make the hooker rich
Conspiracy should be home in three
Until them I look south for the home family
A true G, that's me blowing like a bubble
In the everyday struggle
I don't wanna live no mo'
Sometimes I hear death knocking in my front do'
I'm living everyday like a hustle
Another drug to juggle, another day another struggle
I'm seeing body after body and our mayor Giuliani
Ain't trying to see no black man turn to John Gotti
My daughter use a potty so she's older now
Educated street knowledge I'mma mold 'er now
Trick 'er little dope buying young girls fringes
Dealing with the dope fiend binges
Seeing syringes in the veins
Hard to explain how I maintain
The crack smoke makes my brain feel so strange
Breaking days on the set no sweat from cold moet
Can't bag yet because's still wet
But when I dry back in five at a time
I can clock about nine on the check cashing line
I had to burst on the third
Rehearse that's my word
Thinking the game Ds knew my first name
Should I quit? Shit no!
Even though they had me scared
Yo they gotta eight I gotta teck with air holes
That's just how the shit goes in the struggle mother fucker
I don't wanna live no mo'
Sometimes I hear death knocking in my front do'
I'm living everyday like a hustle
Another drug to juggle, another day another struggle

Sole - Year of the $exxx $ymbol
sing along...
saturday, june 11th, 1 year later,
it took me 21 years to make this album.
but i did 3/4ths of it in the last 2 weeks.
notebooks after phone calls, cars lined up to be extinguished in the office place.
embarcadero is the biggest mauseleum imaginable,
this house can't stay clean.
too many superstars on the rug, too many tags on the fog on the mirror.
this is it, and i can see them when i see me.
reflection is relative, nothing can be finished by then.
these phone bills pile up, forgotten half of the convos anyway.
sole is idol worship, these songs are all different sides of me,
i dont know if that's a good or a bad thing.
but this is cleansing, a baptism in babylon.
a broken bottle of humans where idiosyncrasies are fiestas.
it's party time, and i forgot my hip-hop hat,
cut off all the heads quietly naked screaming for attention.
used to wear my ego as a sweater,
now it's the cape that follows me throughout the atmosphere.
keep your eyes to the ground, swallow your pride.
talk to the voices in your head.
how did the alarm get 2 hours ahead?
it's been like that for a minute, my hands are dirty.
and somehow i manage to separate that from the keyboards and melodies
that swallow up my fantasies.
smoke on these phrasings, i dont wanna be amazing.
just leave me, so i can record album number 6 next month,
and always remain inspired.
i'd promise the outro but i don't want to spoil the moment
i'd promise the outro but i don't want to spoil it...
i picture chubby deaf girls dancing in a black and white freeze frame.
i hear galaxies as communities i shall never see.
oh no, it's those creatures with the big heads and eyes and they're coming for me.
i think of pages burning, and lots of light beaming from an unseen source.
i'm more like this giant making boquets,
the bullet just entered and she entering pain.
it don't rain, it splatters, that's why my data remains after the pain.
don't blame me if all my songs sound the same.
i'm a product of envy and turmoil roller coasting insane.
trying to change the world 5 pages at a time,
calling green lights stops signs, it's all aura laborious.
my aura and story is static like clouds are sculptures.
humanity is too much cotton candy.
here's some food for thought in digestion decompose.
we compose, here's another patented product for your collection.
language is action packed, come on let's picnic,
and nitpick between factions, fact, fiction and mineral.
drink well the cactus...centerfold)?
sink fast, the uprise goes on without us.
i'm all ears, all here, blind to you and your puppeteer.
everyday is truman show,
true men show their face and expose flesh.
who made the cut? my pen is the sax, so the horn blows the grand scheme. relax.
i'd promise the outro but i don't have any time.
i'd promise the outro but this is only the beginning...
sole is the protocol, sex symbol, fly on the wall.
this a pre-emptive strike, match struck.
awestruck beyond comparison, white collar barbarian,
telling the librarian; these are the papers to bury the sky.
it's christmas time, bring in styrofoam cups filling outside of the lines.
these are scribbles for an older exhausted pulse.
it's the return of the never been there.
give me 5 minutes we'll melt you're 12 dollars we stupid crackhead cupids.
milking the earth for what it's worth, with my family or single handedly.
this hand breaks things, this hand molds things.
son i'm in my own shadow,
the mold that breaks the glass.
your ears are my walls and these are mere paragraphs.
follow the architect, sure we're erecting art and texture.
now sole is only human, enjoy my imperfections.
put a red dot on that, slaughtering articles, pen and pixeling particles.
here's your entry, posing makes participants feel practiced, so keep them skills dull.
i bang symbolism off doldrums and still spare minutes.
check my postcards these are letters from god.
i've been practicing this face for centuries.
these are acts of pretention.
i've been practicing this face for centuries.
how you like my grill?
how you like my smile?
i've been practicing this face for centuries and i'll be like this for a minute.
